Hello Parents and Students!

Welcome to the KCS 3rd Grade Web Page.

Please read to the bottom for important events that are coming up.

The Core Knowledge Fair and Art Walk are on 5/8; Core Knowledge projects need to be turned in by then for credit. This is a required homework project worth 100 points.  If you need ideas, please look through What Your 3rd Grader Needs to Know. Anything we have studied or will study may provide a foundation for this project.  The Core Knowledge project would be comparable to a science fair project.

In History, we should have the test for the 13 colonies by May 15 or 16, with a review sheet coming home the week before. After that, we will begin a unit on planets and the solar system for science.

I've started something new for spelling homework. Please click on the spelling page to see this assignment suggestion.

In Math, we are learning to divide, multiply, add and subtract fractions with like denominators, temperature in Centigrade, and word problems.  The students like to figure word problems, plus make up their own!  You can find multiplication and division information in the 3rd Grader book on pages 212-225, mental addition on p. 236, mental subtraction on p. 239, and time, money, and graphs on pp. 245-251.

We will be writing various paragraphs, stories, and journal entries in several subjects, including Math, Science, and History. Students are learning to keep same thoughts and ideas grouped in the same paragraph, use topic sentences, supporting information, and transition words (first, next, finally).  They also need to have a subject and verb in every sentence, along with adjectives and adverbs to make their sentences more interesting. Help in this area can be found on pages 66-74 in the 3rd Grader book.

I am very pleased that students in this class are such lovers of reading, among other talents! They should always keep a book in their desk at school, as well as read each evening. The next book report will be due the 3rd week of May. I am encouraging students to read a biography of someone famous. I would still like the books to be at least 50 pages, if possible, and a poster or diorama will also be required.

If you need ideas or have any questions, please call me after school at 225-8568.
