6th Grade History: Year-at-a-Glance

September- World Deserts, Pearson Learning History & Geography, and Core Knowledge Support Units:

  • Students will describe the various ways that plants, animals, and humans adapt to and change the desert.
  • Students will describe the conditions of the major World Deserts.
  • Students will understand the ways deserts have affected travelers and other visitors.

Week 1:  What is a Desert?

Week 2:  Deserts of Africa

Week 3:  Australia, a Dry Continent and Deserts of North America

Week 4:  Deserts of North America & Patagonia and Its Desert

October- Judaism and Christianity, Pearson Learning History & Geography, and Core Knowledge Support Units:

  • Students will explain about Abraham’s convenant with God and his role as patriarch for Jews, Christians, and Muslims.
  • Students will explain about the Ten Commandments and how God revealed them to Moses.
  • Students will explain about the centrality of Jesus Christ to Christianity.

Week 1: “The Convenant” & “The Ten Commandments”

Week 2: “The Prophets” & “The Life of Jesus”

Week 3: “The Rise of Christianity” & “Ideas about God and Humanity”

Week 4:  Unit Wrap-Up; Begin Ancient Greece and Rome (next unit)

November-Ancient Greece and Rome, Pearson Learning History & Geography, and Core Knowledge Support Units:

  • Students will identify tyranny, aristocracy, oligarchy, and democracy as early forms of Greek government.
  • Students will explain the Spartan system of government.
  • Students will identify contributions made to Greek culture.

Week 1: “The Ancient Greek City-States” & “Athens”

Week 2: “Sparta” & “The Olympic Games”

Week 3: “The Persian Wars” & “The Golden Age of Athens”

Week 4: “The Peloponnesian War” & “Greek Philosophy and Socrates”

December- cont. Ancient Greece and Rome, Pearson Learning History & Geography, and Core Knowledge Support Units:

  • Students will recognize mythology and the early Greek philosophy as ways of explaining natural phenomena.
  • Students will explain about the accomplishments and victories of Alexander the Great.
  • Students will recognize Roman methods of conquering and building an empire.
  • Students will explain about Julius Caesar’s rise to power and his conquests.

Week 1: “Plato and Aristotle” & “Alexander and the Hellenistic Period”

Week 2: “The Roman Republic” & “The Punic Wars”

Week 3: “A Great Roman:  Julius Caesar” & “The Age of Augustus”

Week 4: “Rome and Christianity” & “The Fall of the Roman Empire”

January- The French Revolution and Romanticism, Pearson Learning History & Geography, and Core Knowledge Support Units:

  • Students will understand the main ideas of the French Enlightenment
  • Students will understand the reasons for the growing social unrest in French society.
  • Students will identify Marie Antoinette and her effect on the French people.
  • Students will describe the provisions of the Declaration of the Rights of Man.

Week 2:  The Absolute Monarchs & Queen Marie Antoinette

Week 3:  The Third Estate Revolts & A Time of Violence

March- Independence for Latin America

April- Immigration 

May- Industrialization and Urbanization in America
